A students' special
Go the supermarket just before closing and grab all those 'Use Today'
bargains. Have a fixed budget and don't allow yourselves to overspend. Enjoy
'arguing' over exactly what you should have and also the spontaneity and
unpredictability of what you end up with. Make sure that your allowance
extends to a bottle of supermarket-special plonk.
Push the boat out
Have dinner on a river-boat or canal barge and float serenely through the
darkening countryside sipping a glass of wine and enjoying the hospitality.
Dance the night away afterwards and return home happy and tired.
Make a play for your partner
Well, not quite literally, especially if you don't know each other very
well. Take your partner to a stage play and then out for dinner afterwards
where you can discuss the acting and the story. It is much less expensive to
go to a play than it is to see a musical and there is not usually a waiting
list for tickets.
By the light ...
Have a picnic in the park, on a roof-top, on the beach, on a river-bank or
some such place (depending upon where you are) with it commencing at dusk.
Take some soft illumination with you (tissue paper over a torch beam will
soften it considerably) and also some romantic music. Watch the moon rise and
practice your astronomy together as you try to identify the constellations.
Dinner is served, m'lady
Prepare dinner for your partner and then serve it up wearing a
waiter's or a butler's suit pretending that he or she is dining in a fancy
restaurant or at the table of a stately home. Try to keep up the pretence by
saying things like, "Will there be anything else?" and "You rang?".
Remember to hold your head in the air and not make eye contact and also to 'sniff' a lot.
Don't be tricky (otherwise you will lose the humour) so keep references to wine simple and funny, eg
"A glass of house plonk?" or "Will Chateau Sarsons be to your liking?". Keep a
straight face for as long as you can.
