Wet and wild
If the weather permits, why not spend a day by the water? Go somewhere that
has a shallow lake, hire a paddle or row boat and splash around a bit. Expect
to fall in so the both of you will need to dress accordingly. After you've
burnt off the initial energy and maybe had a picnic lunch, chill out a bit by
sailing a toy yacht on the children's pond and then top it all by feeding the
ducks with what's left over from your picnic.
Gone with the wind
This is a bit of a cash investment but it will be well worth it. A decent
box kite kit costs from about £15 ($22) although it is very easy to spend
hundreds if you want something flashier that does tricks. Go up on a hill and
see whose kite can perform the best. When you are finally exhausted but happy,
find a nice country pub and enjoy hot soup and a ploughman's lunch. Bet your
date can't wait until next weekend to do it again!
Make your pitch
It's an old favourite but it never fails. Go along to a Crazy Golf course
and see who can get into the biggest scrapes. Pretend to lose your temper at
the windmill that just won't let you through or the hole that the ball just
won't go down but, whatever you do, don't let your date think you're taking it
seriously or you will spoil the effect. Round off the day with fish and chips
on a park bench.
Cry till your horse
Take your date for a ride on a horse or pony. Even if you've never done
this before and are scared half to death, take your courage in both hands and
book yourselves in for a quick handling lesson for beginners before you go off
for a hack in the countryside. Saddle sore but happy you will arrive back at
your car a few hours later where you could take your partner off to a nice
Carvery somewhere for a traditional Sunday dinner. Many horse-riding
establishments offer a deal for couples and you should expect to pay in the
order of £100 to £150 ($150 to $225) for the session.
Don't kid yourself
Either you or your partner could borrow a child - nephew, niece etc for the
day and take him or her to places that kids love to go to such as the circus,
kart-racing, zoo, petting farms, fun-fair and so on washed down with fizzy
drinks, candy-floss and a pizza to finish. Your date can't fail to be
impressed by your 'family' appeal and having a child with you is the perfect
excuse to have fun without feeling self-conscious. One thing - make sure you
get the child home before he or she is overtired and then why don't the pair
of you stop for a quick drink before saying 'goodnight'? You'll have earned
it.
