Working late
How you play this will depend upon the sort of job you do but pretend that you
need to visit another factory, shop, location after work and on behalf of your
firm. It would be nice if your partner came with you and maybe you could go
for a quick drink afterwards if there's time. In reality, you've booked a
table for two at a fancy restaurant that's well off the beaten track. Your
partner's face will be a picture when they realise your surprise.
Treasure hunt
A surprise is improved upon if it is gently drawn out and only revealed to
the other person a piece at a time. With that in mind, why not leave a trail
for your partner to follow? For example, have letter (or email) arrive with
instructions to look somewhere. When they find that they are sent to a locker
and from there to a hotel or restaurant or other location where you are
waiting.
It's a pick up
Collect your partner from work in a chauffeur-driven limousine (it's not
that expensive out-of-peak-hours), hand them a bunch of flowers or other small
gift and have yourselves driven through town and out to a little watering hole
in the country (where your vehicle can be parked in advance ready for the trip
home). The touch of style and class will be a lovely surprise for your
partner.
Putting it all on the table
Announce that you will be getting dinner and that you need some basic
ingredients like milk and bread etc. Make the meal sound a bit dreary - you
know, just something to take away the hunger. In reality, while your partner
is out, produce an array of delicacies that you had prepared in advance. When
they return with the shopping they won't believe their eyes as they are
greeted by a table laden with treats.
Just the ticket
This is a surprise date that will need planning a way in advance. Buy some
tickets to a concert, play, musical etc that your partner has always wanted to
go to. On the big day, pretend to take them for a drink and slap-up in the
direction of the event and then, when you finally arrive, produce the tickets
to get in.
