The concept of the dull-eyed, hideously ugly 'Olga the pop-rivet welder' (a figment of anti-Russian propaganda) has long-since been banished and this brings me to a personal tale which still makes me smile.

I was fortunate enough to visit Russia just after the end of the fall of Communism on a two-week break with my (then) new wife. We had the typical tourist package of a week in Moscow and a week in St Petersburg. The food was dreadful and the entertainment non-existent so we were sitting in the hotel bar having a drink and discussing what we had seen (which for me had been some very interesting sights and some of those had been female).
In need of a refresher, I went up to the bar where I was approached by what I can only describe as the most beautiful girl I had ever seen (apart from my own good lady, of course) who bluntly asked me if I would like to go upstairs with her. I normally am credited with the gift of the gab but she left me so speechless that all I could think of saying was a rather stuttered, "Um, I'm um, married," flashing her my wedding ring and indicating my wife who was looking decidedly unhappy with the conversation.

"Oh, don't worry - she can come too," the girl offered obligingly, loud enough for my wife to hear and, at the same time, flashing me a winning smile. I grunted (I think), gratefully snatched up the glasses and wobbled over to my wife. Before I could even say a word, she snapped, 'No!'. I didn't pursue the matter except in my mind.

What I am saying is that there is no doubt Russian women can be incredibly beautiful although I don't think the girl I met was the marrying kind. What we investigate here is what is the best way to date them and do they make good wives and girlfriends.
