What can you do to impress your date? How can you win the
heart of the girl of your dreams?
You're getting ready for your first date with a girl. You desperately want her
to be impressed by you but what can you do to make her feel that you are the
guy for her? OK, you can't beat fate but you can go a long way towards
stacking the odds in your favour. Here are some simple ideas and observations.

- Make sure you dress smartly (but not over the top) and are thoroughly
washed and deodorised.
- Carry a packet of mints with you and take one just before you meet her. You
can always offer her one later, too (she's probably just as worried about her
breath and you can laugh about it).
- When you first see her, make eye contact and compliment her sincerely on
one item of her attire or appearance. Keep the compliment simple and don't
dwell on it so that she thinks you are making a move on her.
- Hold open doors for her and don't sit down until she does - it may be
old-fashioned but it still works just as well today!
- Make sure your suggested destination (eg film, theatre, park, zoo etc) is
one which will lend itself to discussion afterwards.
- Don't be afraid to discuss who pays for what. If you don't want to go
entirely Dutch or if you feel that you don't want to be too 'literal' (eg if
your meal is more expensive than hers) why not suggest that you pay for the
food and she pay for the wine? If she is adamant about going Dutch don't argue
- she's a modern girl and wants to feel that she is not under obligation to
you.
- When talking to your date, make sure that you give her opportunity to
comment and concentrate on what she says. Show her that you are interested in
her opinions.
- Have in mind a couple of genuinely funny, inoffensive jokes and anecdotes
that you can introduce into the conversation if it dries up a bit.
- Don't discuss ex-girlfriends nor any other dates you have seen unless she
asks you, in which case just answer the question - she may only be being
polite (as she sees it). No-one wants to take on a partner who comes with
luggage (ie they haven't got over their ex). A good answer might include -
'Wow, I never think about her any more. Um ...".
- If you see another girl whom you consider more desirable, come back and see
her another day or forget about her altogether. Your date deserves your
attention.
- At the end of the date tell her truthfully whether you would like to see her again. If not, then do it nicely.
If yes, and then she declines, accept it gracefully and like a man. Whatever
happens, don't say that you'll 'leave it to her' - that's cowardly.
- Always be yourself, no matter how humble that might be. If you show off,
pretend to be someone you aren't or just plain lie, you will get found out and
it will end badly.
