What should I wear on a date?
Are you dressed to kill or merely stun into silence? Will
your clothes clobber your chances or your un-ironed shirts give
your date a pressing reason to go early?
You're a few hours away from the big day when you finally get to meet your
date. The nerves have set in and you worried that you'll put on the wrong
clobber and won't look your best. How can you try to make sure that you get
noticed? Well, here's our quick 'what should I wear on a date' checklist. See
if you agree.
- Don't leave it all to the last minute (unless this was a spur of the moment
date). Try to start preparing 24 hours beforehand - no more, no less.
- Check through the rest of this checklist now and see if there is anything
you need to nip out to buy (that's why we say start 24 hours beforehand).
- Get your clothes out, go through the pockets, smell the armpits, look for
stains, loose threads, missing buttons etc. Iron and hang up your chosen
outfit ready for the next day.
- Men should choose a clothes appropriate to the location and, even if it is
a 'casual' event like a picnic in the park, you should still dress up for it.
Choose a smart jacket and trousers with a shirt that complements the outfit.
Wear a matching tie if necessary or if you are comfortable wearing one. If
not, put one in your pocket 'in case'.
- Women should choose a fashionable top and skirt. The top should neither be
translucent nor plunging nor so tight that your bra peeps through when you
raise your arm. Your skirt should not be split-sided nor too short especially
if you are going to go on something like a picnic. Men are men and, if you
look 'easy' then you cannot blame them for thinking that you are. (By the way,
and before you send us in hate mail, this paragraph was approved by
a woman).
- Co-ordinate your clothes with wallet, purse, handbag, shoes, tie, scarf,
jewellery etc. A date worth seeing again will notice and appreciate the
effort.
- Women should select low heels for comfort and sturdiness and men should
take care to choose a pair that are fashionable and don't squeak. Take the
trouble to polish them beforehand.
- After you've had your bath or shower put on your deodorant, perfume or
aftershave in a moderate quantity. Stinking of body odour is not much better
than drowning everyone in your expensive fragrances.
- Never go on a serious date with this intention but, you never know, it may
end up in bed so change the sheets, sprinkle some perfume or aftershave over
the duvet and pack some condoms well out of sight on your person. At worst it
will mean you have a nice clean bed to come back to, even if it is alone.
- Check to see that you have the location and time of the meeting clearly
correctly remembered and that you have the date's contact details should you
need to ring them at the last moment.
- Finally, remember that the other person is likely to be at least as nervous
as you are so don't get too worried about the occasion. If you keep the mood
light you will enjoy the experience and you will have a better chance of
impressing your date.
Good luck with your dating. We hope our suggestions helped answer the
question of what to wear on a date.
